Have you considered a career in education?

Our education teams inspire young people with complex learning disabilities or other support needs by creating and making the most out of all opportunities for them to learn, grow and develop. Could you do the same?

MacIntyre is a leading UK provider of support services to people with learning disabilities. As part of this charity, No Limits provides education programmes to children and young people for whom more traditional learning environments may not have worked. No Limits provides an education programme which is purposefully designed to be right for them. We provide personalised education plans in the community for young people with learning disabilities and/or autism, and currently have vacancies in our Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire services.

Because our Teaching Assistants work mostly out in the community rather than in a classroom setting, your job title would be Community Learning Facilitator. Your key task will be to deliver the education programmes to the learner. You will support the young person to work towards their education targets and your day might involve helping them learn how to use public transport, or take part in or watch sporting activities. You will support the young person to learn practical life skills, and support some people to attend work experience or college.

Because of the complexity of their learning disabilities, young people are almost always supported 1-1 and therefore the work will involve lone working, often in the community. Some young people require support with intimate care or medication and they may, if feeling particularly anxious, show behaviours of concern. Full training in all these areas will be given.

The work is both challenging and inspiring and you are ultimately supporting the young person in their education to prepare for their transition into their adult lives. We will provide you with an extensive and ongoing training programme and dedicated local support from your Team Coordinator.

About you

Perhaps you’ve worked in special education, as a Learning Support Assistant or Teaching Assistant. Perhaps you've been a Support Worker in the social care sector. However, experience is not essential. For us, underlying ability and attitude are just as important as background and experience. If you have not worked in the field of education before then please don’t be put off. We can provide all the specialist training you need, but we can't train you to be kind, to have initiative, to be friendly and patient, and those are essential qualities for this work.

You must hold a licence which allows you to drive in the UK, together with your own transport (can be a motorcycle or moped) with business insurance. You must be willing and able to travel across the area, supporting young people from their own homes. Reasonable mileage is reimbursed.

Pay and Rewards

MacIntyre offers a full induction and ongoing training, including the opportunity to gain nationally accredited vocational qualifications. We also offer a range of benefits which include:

Generous annual leave allowance of 33 days including statutory public holidays, rising with service to a maximum of 38 days after five years
Free training
Workplace pension scheme
Employee Assistance scheme to support your health and wellbeing
MacIntyre Staff Savings Scheme
Opportunities for Transfers and Promotions within MacIntyre

Salaries are dependent on successful completion of a 6 month probation period and relevant qualifications. Part time positions are pro rata.

You'll work 41 weeks a year, which fits with the students' academic year and also includes training and administration days. Dates for terms are provided when new staff join us, and at the beginning of each academic year. During the first year you will be expected to work an additional three weeks (paid) in order to complete your induction, training and development programme.

Closing date: Tuesday 06 February 2018.

Safer Recruitment

MacIntyre is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. This post will require an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check, together with all other relevant recruitment and right to work checks. Where relevant, candidates from outside the EU will need to produce a biometric residency permit. Additionally, any successful candidate who has spent six months or more outside the UK (as an adult) within the last five years will need to obtain an overseas police check.
